　　大海上，一艘装载着核卫星诱导设施的美军货船突然消失。而劫持这艘货船的海盗信（张东健饰）是朝鲜出身，这起了韩国方面的高度不安。韩国政府派出了海军高级军官姜世宗（李政宰饰）去追捕信。海盗信一家曾在1983年从朝鲜逃到韩国，要求政治避难。但韩国政府拒绝了他家的难民申请，致使一家人除了信和姐姐崔明珠（李美妍饰）都惨遭杀害。

◆幕后花絮：韩国影史最高投资电影扫荡票房

　　影片自2004年10月30日开拍，一直到2005年的8月1日才完成了最后的拍摄，历时达9个月。影片曾在韩国、泰国、俄罗斯等国家取景。整个拍摄过程，可以说是颇多的波折与困难。04年年末在泰国取景的时候险些遭遇海啸，之后又因为过新年而耽搁了一段时间，还因为主创人员参加国际电影节而耽误了一定的时间。而多数的海外取景无疑使拍摄周期加长，期间还有张东健为了完成《无极》的后期制作而停滞了一个多月。但是，这些困难都没有阻止这部150亿韩元的韩国影史最高投资的大片与观众见面。在该片上映之前，影片的故事，影片的主创人员等等都成为了韩国电影界的热点。而上映之后的火暴票房则说明了影片还是达到了观众的期望值的。
　　韩国媒体上映前进行的一项调查中，《台风》以455票高居榜首，成为观众最想看的圣诞档影片。而好莱坞的大片《金刚》则只获得了372票居于第二。
事实证明的确是像调查中所显示的，虽然此前宣传做得非常到位的好莱坞的大片《金刚》、《哈利波特与火焰杯》等与其同期上映，《台风》的票房却真的有如台风过境般狂扫一切。首映当天已吸引全国28万名观众入场，比此前反映火爆的《太极旗飘扬》首映当天的23万还要多上五万。仅两天就有56万的观众入场。短短五天时间竟创下了入场观众人次超过180万，打破《太极旗飘扬》保持的177万人的最高纪录！
这个数据立时震动了韩国电影界，本来就很关注此片的媒体更是纷纷报道。当时制片方用剧本向审查会提交审核时，韩国电影等级审查委员会将《台风》定级为15R。意思是15岁以上可入场观看。这个定级对于《台风》来说可是相当理想的。《台风》将电影的主要观众定位为二十至二十九岁的女性，男性和三十岁以上的观众也很多，其实，这也就囊括了电影的主要观众群。票房的胜利证明了这一点。

　　这从《生死谍变》起，韩国的大片情结就一直在不断的膨胀，《共同警备区》、《朋友》、《实尾岛》这些大片都有着不错的成绩。到了《太极旗飘扬》，这种大片情结更是达到了一个超级火热的程度。而05年底上映的《台风》与《青燕》，前者投资了150亿，是韩国电影历史上的最高投资，后者也投资了100亿。可见，在电影市场火热异常的今天，高投入与高产出已经是韩国一些电影人所追求的目标了。但与中国大片票房大热，却口碑奇冷的际遇相反的是，韩国大片的口碑和票房一样的好。这里面的原因很多。之一是韩国大片一般都以朝韩关系为背景。这是韩国国民都关注的问题。其二是影片从故事桥段到场景设置，都做到了非常之精良。这就并非是一些不懂韩国电影的人一句：韩国在学习好莱坞所能说明的了。诚然，韩国确实学习过好莱坞，但他已经走出了一套自己的路子。而《台风》的成功则是证明了这一点。另外值得一提的是在场面上，本片也不输给好莱坞，开头与结尾的两场海战拍摄得也非常大气。
　　而之后韩国大片的路，相信还是会一如既往的走下去。但是，过多的蜂拥至大片，会不会使观众分散，出现票房颓势倒是个问题。不过，在短期之内，这个问题还不在韩国影人的考虑之列。
